Pathways to Independence

Pathways to Independence is a local organisation providing one-to-one and group support to adults with disabilities in Hartlepool.

Founded by sisters Tracey Hay and Christine Fewster, Pathways to Independence aims to help people with a range of disabilities - including autism, behavioural distress and mental health issues - achieve their goals.

Pathways to Independence provides each of their clients with a dedicated 'staff team' so that they see the same three or four people regularly, enabling them to build sound relationships.

A user-led service, the organisation enables its clients to set up their own activities and friendship groups. As such, Pathways to Independence offers a wide range of opportunities to their clients, including:

  • Short break services
  • 24-hour and crisis support
  • Adult education, computer courses and sign language
  • Arts and crafts sessions
  • Health promotion, gym sessions, sports and outdoor pursuits such as skiing and rock climbing
  • Events and and days out in the wider community

Whilst primarily for adults, Pathways to Independence also helps older children with the transition from Children's Services to Adult Social Care.
