Show your pride with the Big Tall Ships Tidy Up

Local people are being urged to help get their town shipshape in time for the Tall Ships Races 2010.

Up to one million visitors are expected to come to Hartlepool during the grand event, which will run from the 7th to the 10th of August, and joint organiser Hartlepool Borough Council wants to make sure they leave with a good impression of the town.

The Great Big Tall Ships Tidy Up has been launched to encourage residents, community groups, businesses and schools across the town to stage their own neighbourhood clean-ups.

The initiative is being run as part of Hartlepool Borough Council's Pride in Hartlepool campaign.

Pride in Hartlepool officer Kate Ainger said: "This is a variation on the theme of Spring Clean Hartlepool, an annual event that usually runs throughout April and May.

"This year, we have delayed the initiative slightly and re-named it to reflect the fact that the town is hosting the Tall Ships Races 2010 in just a few weeks' time."

"It is a great honour for the town to be hosting such a high-profile international event and we want to ensure that we look our best. Although we are talking about small-scale improvements at a grassroots level, collectively the clean-ups have the potential to have a big impact on the image of the town."

Councillor Hilary Thompson, the Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, said: "The Tall Ships Races is a great opportunity for us to showcase to hundreds of thousands of visitors all that is good about Hartlepool.

"It is important that we all pull together to ensure that initiatives such as the Great Big Tall Ships Tidy Up are a success, and that visitors leave with a good impression of the town."

Residents and local organisations - particularly local businesses - are now being urged to organise litter picks and neighbourhood clean-ups.

Pride in Hartlepool is able to offer limited funding towards clean-up costs, free hire of litter picking  equipment, free rubbish sacks and the free removal of all collected litter.
